Ayo, A portrait
Today and tomorrow are portraits that I will put into my colourful category. I plan over the next coming days to post very colourful images. It may mean I may not post regularly as I intend to get the images on the go. I realised after looking through my archive that my images are looking very dark all of a sudden and that is not fully me. I remember during the early years of photoblogging I was known for a lot of colour in my images. The challenge continues...

A lovely smile, well captured.
Jide Alakija: Thanks
unique capture: angle and dof combined
i guess that's you in her eyes then
Jide Alakija: THanks
sharp, sharp sharp
Jide Alakija: That lens is amazingly sharp, actually all my lenses are. That's why I paid good money for them.
Nice one! Wow Jide that is you in her eyeball, clear as day...
I noticed you shot with Aperture Priority...so let me open up a little debate: what really informs photogs' preferences among Full manual, Shutter and Aperture Priority. Does that much thought at all go into the selection or is it set on the fly? As in, how intentional are those setting choices? ahem sorry let me go into our language for Jide here... LOLZ Jiiiide! Egbe ni e o Jide, iwo ko lo so nipe kin ma mark mo n ni?
Jide Alakija: I'm not very good at understanding Yoruba let alone writing it....excuse me as I get some translation help.
Thanks for the comment, yes na me O! Re: choice of Priority, it first and foremost depends on what works best for you. I for one choose Av whenever I'm doing Portraiture without and external flash, in which case I would use Manual (I'll explain later the reason for this later). I use Program mode, P, say when I am taking a series of photographs that I do not really know the what the lighting conditions are going to be like in a few seconds of shooting a scene, probably an event or so where you need to think quick or when I'm not too bothered about the artistic effects you can get by playing with DOF. I use Tv, when I am very sure of the speed I want to shoot at, say for instance I want to do some slow flash sync stuff (this might be a bit advanced for you now). The other thing that affect Priority choice is the metering mode of the camera. I sometimes meter Evaluative or Spot. The first is just and average reading of light by the sensor and the latter is a specific reading based on the light of the reading point chosen. (Again this might be going into new territory for you). Some people like Mista Skee (www.skee.shutterchance.com), shoot in Manual all the time as he does a lot of event work with his camera. He keeps his shutter speed on say 1/60 (when indoors) or 1/200 (when outdoors) so that his shots don't have any motion blur caused by movement. This obviously means that he is technically shooting in Tv, but with the freedom to change aperture when he wants. I personally don't think there is any difference shooting in any modes as they are all the same but with one variable fixed each time ie. Av (Aperture fixed), Tv (shutterspeed fixed), Manual (exposure compensation fixed). However this is all based on a reading taken by the camera. If you were shooting with an external flash then the camera cannot take a reading as it doesn't know anything about the lighting conditions you are going to impose on your shot so in that case you would always need to shoot in Manual with the aid of a light meter which will give you an accurate reading of light. Okay something tells me I may have lost you hear.
Real photographers shoot manual! (and Nikon)
Couldn't resist that...hehe. The shot is technically sound and pleasing. I can't help wanting the second eye in focus though...
Interesting...so I guess it gets switched up as occassion demands. Nice than one is not constrained by one priority mindset! LOL @ Stan, I always shoot manual with my NIKON so...what that says about me
Thanks Jide and nagh I was with you the whole time, never lost me... I know all the theory just practicalizing the way peeps like you are able to, is where the trouble begins for me... Kasa! omo Yoruba ti o gbo yoruba, interestin...
Okay great advise ... I was also wondering why u used different program modes, but I appreciate that you explained the reason why ... great portrait ... did u check out my current one ... I didn't have the courage to put it out until I saw yours ... hope you like Thanks!
wonderful perspective..!
this is a really cool shot, the shallow DOF really works well
oh my Jide absolutely stunning, a pose to melt a thousand hearts
Hmnn, that explanation there is one of d main reasons I joined SC. Lovely image,DOF&catch light
lovely portrait...love the blues...
She's so pretty
Jide thanks for the tutorial ... nice!!, Yinka, you may want to get the boomk "UNDERSTANDING EXPOSURE" by Bryan Peterson, IMO its one of the best books out there that explains the relationship between Apperture, Shutterspeed, Light, DOF, Manual etc, and it has tons of image that shows you the effect when you change any of these variables. You can also check out the Official Canon tutorials for the 40D on Youtube. Those helped as well.
