Monarch momentum

This is one of my experimental nights. With nothing interesting to put up you've got to make your shot look interesting. So I decided to do a motion blur with it. I'm quite happy with the results. Oh mind you this is not a striaght motion blur as you can see the soldier is a tad bit in focus at least more than the rest of the image.

What do you think?

Post processing:Sharpening through Alpha channel, highlight through blue channel, curve adjustments, color balance, channel mixer, motion blur

WIL:
-Composition
-All the colors and the smooth look of the colors.
-Motion blur*

WIDL*:
-Motion blur. Motion blur is to show motion, what I see here is just blur on both sides. There is a blurry glow to the right and left of the lamp post and the guard fella. If this was to show motion, then that would mean that the camera was going back and forth in order for the glowy blur to show on both sides. Now if you were going in one direction, then the "blurry glow" would be on one side, not both.
I hope what I am saying makes sense.
-Too much photoshop my friend. You know what they say, less is more.

Overall, good image, but too much/unnessisary post processing.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Reza, like it that you are honest. Didn't think that there was too much processing at the time, then again it's not too your taste. Will try something else again.

It's quite an interesting image, but as a photograph, it's not my kind of thing, with all the heavy processing.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Veloran, yeah I knew that it wouldn't be to your taste for the reason of heavy processing. Like it that you are honest. Thanks.

I'm going to be fussy LOL ok I lovew this concept and would've never thought of it : very creative.Although what I think would make it better is if you added a mask to the motion blur and painted the soldier back into sharpness and focus and I think it would look really cool if he wasn't blurry and the rest was.Even the other way around might work (soldier blurry rest clear) but I still love this shot. The composition is brilliant.
Still gets my coveted GREAT GREAT SHOT!!! (more excamation marks means you were closer to GREAT GREAT GREAT, god I love my system grin)
Jide Alakija: Thanks Azhar. Yeah I agree on the focussed Soldier, I didn't try it but didn't want too much focus on him. I guess it's one of those shots where you either like it or not.

yeah, very nice but i little too blury for me, but it works nice! smile take care my friend smile
Jide Alakija: Thanks Bruno. I'll try and put something not too blurry again. grin
I like the effect - makes that guy look like a fast walker! cheers smile
Jide Alakija: Thanks David. I like it too.
I love the colour tones in this but I think I would have preferred to see the soldier sharp and the rest blurred or vice versa rather than everything blurred.

Still love the colour tones smile
Jide Alakija: Thanks Simon, I tried it without the blur and it just looked too standard. Now I tried the blur and the colour was more obvious, I guess maybe a lens blur would have sufficed. Thanks all the same.

I is down wit da experimentation.. (sorry we do speak like that work)
I actually like the shot. As with others motion blur a bit too strong for me but certainly love the colours.
Jide Alakija: Somehow I knew you'd like it, weird like me, I love wierd images too. An even weird one might be up tomorrow. wink

I'm almost dizzy again! No, love the pic, like the fact that the soldier is at the far end and he looks like a toy (tiny).
Jide Alakija: Sorry Mona, just what happens when I experiment, there's a warning that comes with them.

Getting off the motion blur for a second, where did that wonderful blue in the windows come from? Was that sky reflection??
Jide Alakija: I was wondering if anyone would notice the blue. I processed the dull blue curtains inthe window and brought them out a bit. Thanks.

Questions - why? Why motion blur? Why the building? If it's to resemble a pan, then the guard would be sharp (except for his legs). If it's to show the moving elements in the scene, then the guard would be blurred but the building would be sharp. This just looks like you used a jack-hammer for a monopod.

BUT, I usually like to see moving things moving INTO the picture, but in this instance, moving out of it works very well because of the guard box, to which these guards always return. You can almost see an 'about turn' coming up.
Jide Alakija: I guess I wasn't really sure if I was trying to show motion, I just wanted to apply an effect to the image. When I put it up I needed a title to go with it and "Momentum" came out from now where.

Thanks all the same.

Unfortunately I am not feeling this shot. I think that partly it might be the scene, because it doesn't hold enough interest for me personally. The other reason might be that there is not enough motion for me to really buy into the motion blur and it just becomes horizontal blur in my eyes.

Hi Jide, I have to say for me it is not an image that I like or dislike, it's an ok shot. I would think the pressure to post a great shot every day must be immense so an occasional blip along the way is no big deal.

The other point being that unless you try you never know.
I like this one... "It's quite different"!

Nice framing!

Simply put, would one buy this image? Maybe maybe not. I fall on the side of maybe not. Does not deter from it being a nice image, different image. But will not hang up on me wall

Now would I see this in the Tate someday? I will definitely say YES. Now what does that tell you? Either Suby does not have good taste or the rest of the world is going bonkers. smile

Suby
You like to test our taste? It looks not like the great pictures you post otherwise. In my mind it´s too ordinary smile

I can see this pic on the cover of the next 'Blur' CD, and titled "March On"...
It's interesting in a weird sorta way...
Thanks Everyone.
"I guess it's one of those shots where you either like it or not."

I'm not so sure about that! smile I'm right on the fence. As I sit arm's distance away from the shot, I can respect the attempt and experimentation. Regards.
I love the shot actually and I think I might have liked it more without the motion blur. The aspect ratio is perfect for a photo like this and the red tunic against the blue reflections in the windows is great. This is fantastic composition if I do say so.
