The Rope

This was a test shot I did when I was hosting a photography exhibition in TerraKulture, Lagos. It really doesn't say anything about the gallery or the exhibition but I thought it was somewhat interesting at the time. I've not had any use for it until now.

Tell me what do you think about this shot? Colours?

A rope trick, if it's gold, can I have it? Maybe it will help pay for my CS2 lol.
Jide Alakija: Hehehe. Nice that you like it. You know how I'm really not an abstract type photographer.

Hi Jide, great colour, detail & texture in this close-up..cheers smile
Jide Alakija: Thanks David.
Neat texture and color.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Jason.
Fantastic ! Great (warm,golden) colors!
I am not so sure about the background.
Jide Alakija: Nah. The background is off, but not bad for a test shot. Thanks.
This is an incredible shot. I love how the simplicity of a shot can revolutionize the way you look at a subject. I like this one very much.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Brent.

Works good for me, shadows, light, background, blur, detail, colour all come together very nicely, i like.
Jide Alakija: Thanks. Hmm...seems you've learnt a thing or two from our blogs.

well again my 2cents. Once again first impression of the pic (me no likie). On second thots nice attention drawn to the rope by accentuating the gold color. Absolutely fab. But then its got me thinking: Is the rope gonna be used for the gallows to terminate someone or is an assasin off to his next assignment and getting the tools ready, is it gonna be used at a farm or the butchers etc (Forgive the rambling and the weird imagination). Oh i'm now officially addicted to leaving comments so you must be doing things rite. keep up the good work.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Tolu, keep the comments coming.
Great close-up!!!
Jide Alakija: Thanks Chantal.

I really like the way you've "fuzzed out" (so non-technical!) the background to allow every detail in the 'fibre' of your subject to stand out. Love the gold tones too: but I did find the purple blotch in the background a tad distracting. Fab overall though!
Jide Alakija: Thanks Inu.
I've already got "rope burn"
Jide Alakija: Really? Where? Link?
I really like the composition, colors and detail of the rope. Though I do find the background a bit distracting.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Otto K.
I like the way u focus on this and it's composition. How did you make the rope glow by the way?
Jide Alakija: Thanks GeckoZ, I increased the temperature in the Raw converter around the rope, hence the glow.
Just awesome! Sharpness, colors, depth of field .. everything is great about this picture.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Ashish Sidapara.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Dionne.

So tightly wound, it immediately reminded me of a guitar string, until I noticed it was rope, not steel. It does look golden. Nice and sharp too. It's a good metaphor for being wound too tightly.
Jide Alakija: Thanks andy.
would like to see the picture
Jide Alakija: Sorry what picture would you like to see?

It always amazes me that the most basic of items can make a good image. I'm sorry but I have to agree with some of the other comments, the background is distracting. Perhaps put the rope on a black background? Or a flat blue/turquoise? Being on the opposite side of the colour-wheel should bring the gold out even brighter.
Sorry to go on, Mark
Jide Alakija: I love very contructive and critical comments on my blog so please go on if you have to. Thanks Mark.
i like the light on this shot. You seem to have a knack for lighting your scenes well.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Carter, you have the same in your shots too.
Nice framing of the subject. Not sure about the background though. It's blurred out but a bit distracting still.
Jide Alakija: The same comments again. The background issue. Was a test shot. I guess material is slowly running out. Okay will have some fantastic stuff tomorrow. Thanks.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think there's a slight softness (focus-wise) to the rope? This had the potential to be razor-sharp and really stand out.

As for the background, you don't always have control over what's there, only how you deal with it, so I find it quite acceptable.
Jide Alakija: Shallow DOF. Thanks Colin.
