Looking to the Heavens

Theme of the Week: Portraits of emotion

Shot 1:Looking to the Heavens

This week I plan to show you some work that I've done on portraiture.

What is a portrait? In my definition a portrait is a painting, photograph, or other artistic representation of a persons character. Some people are presented with a full frontal image of themselves, for some others it's just an alternative of their image e.g. in the form of a shadow or silhoutte. These are all reflections of the inner most being.

When I take a portrait this inner person is the thing I am in seach of. I'm hoping that you'll be able to see that from all the portraits I'll be showing through the week. What do you see in this picture?

Oh! The thing I was going to show you, I have to postpone it. I couldn't get enough material for it to happen. I know I lifted your hopes up but please do forgive me. I'm hoping that this theme will be equally as good. SORRY! (Suby)

In other news, we've added a link to help you bookmark our photoblogs. You can see it on the left of this text, together with the "about me", etc links. Hope you find this feature useful.

I'm almost glad you had to change your plan, this picture sure makes up. You know I am sucker for portrait shots.
Jide Alakija: I have a few actually, just not many men in them. Women are drawn to my camera I can see. wink
Nice soft lighting and good composition, Jide. Great model too.
Jide Alakija: Thnx.

Wonderful!
Sorry Jide I don't know what happened but your site disappeared from my screen before I finished my comment. I was gonna say... This is an excellent example of a portrait. I think the rendering is a little high, (the rightside of her face) but in terms of your expression, I think it's definitely been achieved. She's beautiful in this image and I'd say she's beautiful in reality as well.
Jide Alakija: Thanks ndiginiz. I wonder what happened to, web servers...dam them.

Excellent. The dramatic lighting gives it powerful feel. It seems like a frame from a film.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Dave. I found very clever ways to soften the light from my speelite.
Great shot Jide. Perfect lighting.
Jide Alakija: Thanks samcam. I hope I can do this tomorrow.

I love everything about this portrait but the fact that the strap of her dress is twisted. Would have been a wonderful enlargement.

And yes I actully like the picture not just the model. grin
Jide Alakija: I was waiting for your response on this one. Thanks David.
Thanks for the stoping by reasonoflife. This is a geourgous portrait. Love the use of the light and how uo framed it. Looking forward to see more of it.
Jide Alakija: I'll be stoping there daily, some brilliant stuff. Thanks
I like the softness of the photo, but the strap on the side is a bit distracting. Also, I think a different color background might have set the model off some more. Still, it is a very nicely composed shot and draws the eye in.
Jide Alakija: I thought the strap was distracting too. But as I always say you can't win them all. Thanks.

Your pictures always have a certain glow(the coloured ones. dunno if nobody else has noticed this) That's what I interprete as being your signature and is more obvious in this portrait. One of the things that makes it a pretty good job. E ku ise
Jide Alakija: You are not the first person to tell me that. I don't do it intentionally. Okay I've removed the golden tint in tomorrow image because of your statement. Thanks. smile
Thats great.. a very smooth and relaxed feeling.
Jide Alakija: Thanks Brett. She was really relaxed when I took it. I was as nervous as a cat!

Good portrait. I think the lighting is just right. You either have a very good makeup artist or you have done a lot of cleaning up in Photoshop or possibly a combination of both. Well done
Jide Alakija: Thanks. You sound like you are talking from experience. I wouldn't be surprised with the quality of stuff I've seen on your site.

Hey Jide, I am extremely grateful for producing such a beautiful picture of me. I love it!!!!!!!!!!
Jide Alakija: The pleasure is all mine. Thnx to you too.
Nicely done, it looks like a cd cover. Basically I'm not a fan of the "skin blur", but on this photo, I must say that it really goes well.
Well done!
Jide Alakija: I spent hours working on it. Good to see it paid off. Thanks.
Very artistic shot - eyes are amazing
