The Lost of Ikorodu - #1 - Into the Blue

This photo was taken on my trip to a project in Ikorodu, just north of Lagos. I suddenly got the urge to process an image today. If you are still out there, I would love to know what you think. And Happy New Year (in arrears) by the way.

That's a killer shot, Jide. Somewhat too predictable in terms of the composition (dead center), but I'm sure, you had your reasons for it. The old wood of the boat, its reflection, the overall calmness of early morning (I assume, as an evening shot would've been in warmer tones), all come together here. Surely, you made the guy proud. He got famous through the whole fishing village, and maybe a few adjacent ones now.
What was the goal of your project? could you elaborate?

Jide Alakija: Thanks Viktor, re: composition, I don't think there is any other way I could have composed it better. As Ingrid has pointed out, the main subject is not in the centre and it does look well balanced with the front of the canoe being the most prominent part of the vessel.

AVSI is an Italian charity working with the Catholic church on projects in the Third world. They managed to secure some land in Ikorodu for some settlers who have been travelling from Cotonou, Republic of Benin. They have developed communities on this land by providing them with the basic necessities such as shelter, water and in most cases schools and medical facilites.

I was introduced to one of the Facilitators at AVSI who took me to this project to inform me of the kind of things there were doing there. It was quite facinating.

Beautiful photograph. Lovely atmosphere of quiet and calm. Love the texture of the boat and the reflections in the still, glassy water. (:o)

Nice work my guy. Always good to see stuff other than your usual portraits smile The processing is very effective. I'd plan to print it large if it were mine.

Great capture Jide, although some of the horizon seems to be lost in the centre.. pp? or was that intentional. Happy New Year. Tell us about this 'Project'..

A beautiful image - I love the different blues together. I don't agree with the comments about the composition, because although the boat is central, the figure is well to the side. I think it is a well balanced composition.

Yes, we're still out here, but not necessarily daily on my part, I regret to say. Redundant now, so working hard to make ends meet one way or another.

I agree with you - there's little else you could do to improve the composition with the main point of focus on one of the thirds and the equally featureless canvas above and below the boat divided equally.

Love it!

I like the near illusion that the boat is floating in an endless sea, with just the hint of a horizon. The shades of blue are delicious.

There's almost a ghost image in the centre of the boat - something long and rectangular from just below the oarsman's hand to where the bow leaves the water, what is it?
